October 2008 Newsletter
Eagle Valley Elementary School
October, 2008
Dear EVES Families,
It was wonderful to see everyone during our Open House. Students were so excited to introduce their parents to their new teachers in their new classrooms. The energy was incredible as the rooms buzzed with enthusiasm. A huge THANK YOU goes out to the PTA for putting together a delicious potluck dinner.
I would also like to thank all EVES families that supported Wild West Day 2008. Some of you took the time to volunteer during games while others donated baked goods and green Jell-o for slime. At EVES, we appreciate all the hard work put forth into this special fundraiser and realize how lucky we are to have such a supportive community.
As we look forward to October, I would like to invite all parents to contact classroom teachers for parent/teacher conference appointment times. Our conferences will be held on October 14 and 16 from 3:30 to 7:00. During this conference, please do not expect your child’s teacher to have a report card ready for you. Rather, your child’s initial assessment information, along with more formative (informal) data will be presented to give you an idea of how students have settled in at the beginning of the year. Formal, standards-based report cards will be sent home at the end of November, marking the end of the first trimester.
Thank you for a wonderful start to the new school year. The month of October is always an exciting one as students have, by now, swept away the summer cobwebs and gotten into a groove for learning.
Respectfully,
Monica Lammers

CAFETERIA INFORMATION
A few points about our cafeteria to consider and review:
• The cafeteria only has two small microwave ovens. We have approximately 60-115 students eating lunch at each lunch service. There is not enough time to microwave frozen, large portions, or specialty foods for all these children. Please send only cold food or easy, quick-to-heat items with your children or they may be eating uncooked food.
• Please have food sliced for your children. It is difficult for lunch personnel to take the time to slice and dice home-prepared foods.
• Please ask your children not to take food off of other student’s plates. Students may have allergies or viruses that can be shared.
• Please remind your students that they should not throw food or drinks on other students.
Thank you for your help!
FOOD DRIVE
The Annual Make a Difference Food Drive, sponsored by the Vail Police Department, is starting once again! Beginning October 6th, please bring in cans, boxed food, or plastic containers (NO GLASS) of non-perishable food items. Drop off your items in your child’s classroom box located in the lobby area. The class with the most food items will win an ice cream party!
Last year, EVES collected 14,000 pounds of food items – let’s try to set a new record!
The final day to bring in food items will be the morning of Friday, October 24th!
NURSE’S OFFICE
A reminder to Kindergarten and First Grade Parents to please keep an extra set of clothes in their student’s backpack. Also, the Nurse’s Office could use any good used clothing that students have outgrown.
A NOTE FROM MUSIC
Grades 3-5 will be starting recorders soon. The school has recorders for the students to use, but many students like to have their own recorder so they can take it home and keep it. Ordering information will be sent home soon.
The music club will begin October 22nd and is open to students in grades 3-5. In music club, students play recorders, percussion instruments, and tone chimes with a concert in the winter and one in the spring. We will meet every Wednesday after school from 3:00-4:00.
New this year! The EVES choir will meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school beginning October 21st. Rehearsals are from 7:30 (when the busses arrive) – 8:00. The choir will share concerts with the music club. It is open to students in grades 2-5. More information about Choir and Music Club will be sent home with students.
Thanks,
Mrs. Baker
PTA NEWS
The next PTA meeting will be October 13th from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the teachers’ lounge.
Our PTA is sponsoring a program for the students with national award-winning artist Bonnie Phipps. Bonnie will combine storytelling, autoharp playing, folk singing, and spoon playing in her educational and entertaining program. Feel free to come to a performance at either 8:15 or 9:15 a.m. on October 21st.
Parents – please check out the television monitor in our lobby – to see the top Wild West Day Raffle Ticket Salespeople! Thanks to all of the students for working so hard at selling raffle tickets.
THANK YOU!
A huge thank you to our PTA parents and volunteers who worked so hard to make Wild West Day a success!
REMINDERS
Please call the office 328-6981 by 8:30 a.m. if your child is going to be absent from school.
Please remember to send a note with your child if they have a change of plans after school.
Please mark jackets, hats, etc. with student’s name.
Please complete a “Pre-Approved Absence Form” if you know in advance that your child/ren are going to be absent from school. This form needs to be approved by the Principal no later than five school days prior to the planned absence.
EAGLE PUBLIC LIBRARY
Join the fun as musician and storyteller Bonnie Phipps presents a Halloween Hullaballoo! Bonnie will share upbeat songs and stories about monsters on vacation, girls with 10-foot long names, a squeamish babysitter, and more. Children will get lessons on how to “boo” and scream in “Halloween Song,” and hear an Appalachian version of the Hansel and Gretel tale. Bonnie Phipps is an award winning artist who uses her hot pink and turquoise autoharps to accompany her songs and to heighten the action in her stories. A perfect pre-Halloween treat!
