December Newsletter
Dear EVES Families,
Our first trimester has now come to an end and both students and teachers have experienced their first school break since the day off in September. Snow is now flying and everyone is gearing up for the winter holidays and a new year.
Students are continuing to work very hard in school and are all progressing well. Our Kindergarten students are going through their “fall” testing at the current moment, as they do not participate in assessments at the beginning of the year. Given their limited skills and background, we wait until they have been in school for a couple months before we assess their abilities.
I wanted to take the opportunity to thank our Student Council members as they organized both a food drive and Veteran’s Day assembly for our students. Both were successes. Please also note that the veterans from the Vail VFW post has donated a US flag and a Colorado state flag, along with their stands, to our school. We are anxiously awaiting their arrival. We greatly appreciate their generosity.
In closing, I look forward to seeing everyone at our first annual holiday celebration with Red Hill Elementary School. We will be joining RHES, under the direction of Stacy Folkmann, our music teacher, for our holiday program at Eagle Valley High School on Dec. 12th at 6:30pm.
Enthusiastically,
Monica Lammers
Monica Lammers
WINTER WEATHER POLICY
Please note that all students are expected to be outside for recess unless the temperature is zero or below or the wind chill is a factor. Please make sure your child(ren) are dressed appropriately for the winter weather and that their winter clothing is marked with their names.
GREAT READING IN PROGRESS (GRIP)
A big thank you to Eagle Valley Elementary School PTO! Our parent teacher organization will once again be funding the GRIP Program. GRIP is a reading incentive program offered to EVE students. This year students in grades 2-5 are invited to participate.
Each classroom teacher has developed guidelines for earning GRIP books. For example, some students will be keeping track of the number of minutes he/she reads, while other students will give book talks once they have finished reading a book.
Once a week, students who have earned a free GRIP book will visit the Flight Room and choose a brand new book. When a student has earned 5 free books, his/her name will be announced over the intercom, printed in the school newsletter and their picture will be posted in our front lobby. In addition, students will be given a medal (dog tag) to proudly display on his/her backpack. Every time a student earns 5 more free books, they receive a new medal. Each level of the reading program is represented by a color of the rainbow to complement our “Reading Rainbow” theme.
The GRIP program is a tradition here at EVES and has been a fun way to encourage reading. If you have any questions about the GRIP program, feel free to contact your child’s teacher or one of the GRIP program coordinators (Liz Karr and Anita Ortiz).
WINTER NOTES FROM THE P.E. DEPARTMENT
The PE year is well under way. After starting the year with a guest Karate teacher, Mr. James Lee, students have had a great time learning about physical fitness, soccer, and football. Students impress me daily with their knowledge and execution of skills being studied and practiced.
In order to facilitate their learning, students need to remember to wear or bring tennis shoes to school on their PE days. I realize that some days are snowy and cold, but tennis shoes are needed to help keep your child from slipping, falling, and getting toe injuries as they learn and practice old and new skills. Please help your child remember their tennis shoes, especially on those cold and snowy days. Thank you for your help in this matter.

With a blend of education and amazing magic, Christian will perform magic tricks that work with math and give students some clues to help them figure them out! Some of the math magic tricks Christian will perform will be the floating table, the human calculator, magic squares, and Chinese sticks. His goal is to show your students that there is more to math than they might think. He exemplifies the motto – “learning can be fun!”
(Thank you, PTO, for sponsoring our assemblies!)
